Andrew McKnight Folk Concert

Andrew McKnight Folk Concert
APRIL 28 @ 7:00 PM

Andrew McKnight is returning to Bristol after too long an absence. The talented musician and “story tender” has strong Bristol roots despite his many years living in Virginia. His family members and time spent in Bristol have inspired several of his most popular songs. His last visit and concert included the dedication of a new gravestone at West Cemetery in memory of his veteran of the Civil War ancestor, Aretas Culver, whose story inspired a very moving song. Since permanently leaving his corporate environmental engineering career in 1996, award-winning folk/Americana artist Andrew McKnight’s musical journey has traced nearly a million miles of blue highways, and earned him a wealth of critical acclaim and enthusiastic fans for his captivating performances and ten recordings.

Andrew’s solo performances are powerful and entertaining one-man theater, delivered with warmth and down-home comfort. He weaves his finely-crafted songs and nimble flatpicking together with humorous stories and poetic drama, while the musical soundscape traverses influences from Appalachia, spooky slide and jazzy blues, feisty anthems, and rustic folk. His shows are as likely to include humorous songs written with kindergartners as some of his powerful collaborations with combat veterans coping with PTSD.

His latest album and book Treasures in My Chest adds a dynamic new element to his show, introducing a cast of spellbinding songs and stories drawn from his own recent journeys into family history. From placing you in the footsteps of his doomed Civil War ancestor Aretas Culver, to finding sparks of hope in the long winter nights on the shores of mid-1800s County Down, his vision, voice and pen have created a mesmerizing sweet spot deeply familiar to anyone who’s wondered, “who am I and where did I come from?”

Andrew has performed at many prestigious venues like the Kennedy Center, the International Storytelling Center and the Atlanta Olympics, has been part of the Rocky Mountain, South Florida, Boston and Delmarva Folk Festival lineups, and a guest on NPR’s “Art of the Song” and “River City Folk” shows. He is a gifted workshop leader, an engaging speaker, and a longtime endorsing artist for Elixir Strings and Fairbuilt Guitars.

Suggested $20 donation, but no one will be turned away

Organized by: Andrew McKnight and Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 851 Stafford Avenue, Bristol. Event location: Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.

72nd Annual Perry J. Spinelli Fishing Derby

The City of Bristol Department of Parks, Recreation, Youth and Community Services (BPRYCS) will host its 72nd Annual Perry J. Spinelli Fishing Derby on April 29, 2023. This year’s fishing derby will be a morning filled with great catches, fun prizes, and memories to last a lifetime. Children of all skill levels 13 years old or younger are welcome to bring their fishing poles to Page Park Pond to reel in some great catches with BPRYCS.

The 72nd Annual Perry J. Spinelli Fishing Derby will take place at Page Park Pond on Saturday, April 29, 2023 from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM. There is no cost for registration or participation in the fishing derby. Registration for this free event will take place between 6:30 AM and 7:00 AM at the pond with the first cast starting right at 7:00 AM.

Madison Fostervold, Recreation Program Assistant, commented, “We are looking forward to another great fishing derby and watching the community come together for a fun morning of fishing and prizes.”

Participants in this year’s Derby are asked to follow a few rules in order to secure their catch. Each participant may use 1 fishing pole, 1 hook, and 1 bobber to catch their fish. Participants may lure their catches in with any legal bait, but artificial lures and gang hooks are not allowed. While this event is a family event, we ask that parents or guardians may assist in casting, but ensure the children land their own fish. Prizes will be awarded for a variety of categories.
Fostervold stated, “We cannot thank our sponsors enough for their generosity and support to keep this event going for 72 years. We would like to thank Bristol Police Union, City True Value, Local 233 AFSCME Union, Oakland LLC, and Bristol Professionals & Supervisors Association for their continued support ensuring we have another great year out on the pond. The community support helps us provide prizes and memories for our participants to leave the event with.”

For more information regarding the 72nd Annual Perry J. Spinelli Fishing Derby, and for a full set of rules, please visit www.bristolrec.com. This year’s fishing derby will be held rain or shine, and all participants are encouraged to arrive at the Page Park Pond between 6:30 AM and 7:00 AM to register. For questions, please contact Madison Fostervold, Recreation Program Assistant, at madisonfostervold@bristolct.gov.
