BRISTOL — The St. Paul Falcons softball team fell to Ellington on opening day of the 2024 season after a strong finish late in the final two innings allowed Ellington to comeback on the Falcons.
Ellington got the score flowing early in the first inning as they notched a run in the top of the first inning on a two out, RBI single by Kat Czyz. Ellington then scored again in the top of the third before the St. Paul Falcons bats could come alive.
Breyona Demora drilled a one out single up the middle, reaching second on a sacrifice bunt by Stella Boucino. Taylor Williams followed with an RBI single right on a 3-2 count.
Ellington led 2-1 heading into the fourth inning.
In the home half of the fourth inning, all the Falcons scoring came after the first two outs. A walk to Julia Lawson was followed by Lily McCulloch, reaching on an error. Laila McCulloch followed with a two RBI single, pushing the Falcons ahead 3-2.
Ellington’s Camryn Fisher then became the offensive star of the game also by blasting a one out, three run-homer in the top of the sixth inning and added another homer in the top of the seventh.
Fisher finished offensively with a 5 RBI day.
Fisher and Czyz had two hits for Ellington and Laila McCulloch had two hits and two RBI's for St. Paul Catholic.
Ellington junior Fisher also notched her 500th career strikeout in the third inning of Saturday's season opening game. Fisher is committed to attend Syracuse University and finished the day with 16 strikeouts.
The winning pitcher was Ellington’s Cam Fisher while the losing pitcher was St. Paul’s Lauren Kozlak.
St. Paul Catholic will travel to Ansonia on Monday for their first road game of the season before returning home on Wednesday to face Holy Cross. For Ansonia, it will be their first game of the season when they get set to face the Falcons at 4:45 p.m.
Holy Cross on the other hand lost their first game of the season in dominating fashion. Holy Cross was torched by Woodland in their season-opener, falling to Woodland 26-0. Holy Cross will face Torrington on Monday before facing St. Paul.
Torrington lost to Derby 2-1 in their season-opener.
