Antique Clocks

On Saturday, November 1st, the American Clock & Watch Museum located at 100 Maple Street in Bristol, will host a presentation about clocks manufactured in Western Connecticut during the 18th and 19th centuries. The program will be held from 10:00 – 12:00 and include a gallery talk followed by a tour that will point out examples of timepieces featured in the presentation. The public is welcome to attend. On Monday, November 3rd from 10-4, the American Clock & Watch Museum located at 100 Maple Street in Bristol, Connecticut will host a clock identification day. The museum invites anyone who wants to learn more about an American-made clock or watch they own, to meet with the curator to discuss the timepiece. Regular admission prices will be charged, but the identification program will be included with the price of admission. Fall 2008 Story Time Schedule set for the Children’s Department at the Bristol Public Library!

The fall 2008 Story Time session begins MONDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2008 in the Children’s Department at the Bristol Public Library (5 High Street, Bristol, CT 06010). All story times in the Children’s Department are drop-in; registration is NOT required. The schedule is as follows:

Story times for BABIES (0-12 months) are Tuesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. and Wednesday afternoons at 1:00 p.m.

Toddler Times (12-24 months) are Tuesday mornings at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m., and Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m.

Stories for children 2 years and 3 years old are Tuesday mornings at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday mornings at 11:00 a.m., and Thursday mornings at 11:00 a.m.

Stories for children 4 years and 5 years old are Monday afternoons at 1:45 p.m., Wednesday afternoons at 4:00 p.m., and Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m.

Stories for children 6 years and 7 years old are Tuesdays at 4:00 p.m.

Reading adventures for kids 8 years and older are:

7Th Annual Wild About Animals Festival
Date: Friday, November 07, 2008
Join us as we celebrate animals of all types. Live animal demonstrations will be presented by local organizations throughout the museum. The museum will be filled with a variety of animals including lizards, great horned owl, red-tailed hawk, a miniature horse and pony, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, snakes, and many other animals. The evening will include a perfomance by Jim Knox's Wild Zoo Safari, and a 36ft mobile petting zoo from the Sharon Family Farm filled with a variety of exotic animals including alpaccas!
5:00-8:00pm.

Children can create some cool animal craftsand learn all about animals and their habitats. Pizza, soda, and ice cream will be available for purchase at our old-fashioned Soda Fountain.

This festival is sponsored by the Bristol Mayor's TEAM (tourism, entertainment, arts, & museums). Reduced admission of $4.00 per person, children under one and members are free. For further information call 860-314-1400.

The Stranger You Know: Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program
Date: Thursday, November 13, 2008
Plan to attend "The Stranger You Know", a FREE parent/community education program for the recognition and prevention of child sexual abuse. The program will be held on Thursday, November 13 from 6-8 PM at Bristol Eastern High School's Auditorium. Free childcare is available (registration required for childcare, see link below). Certificates of attendance will be available for participants who require them.

Our instructor Commander Robert F. Kenary (Ret.) is the recipient of the Martin A. Burnham Award for child abuse prevention and two official citations from the Connecticut General Assembly for child sexual abuse prevention (2006, 2007).

Bob spent 33 years with the East Hartford Police Department, 30 of those years in the detective division. He was assigned to the FBI for two years investigating sexual offenses against children. Bob is a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Among his many professional affiliations are the Institute of Living and the Department of Psychiatry at UConn School of Medicine.

Did You Know:

In the year 2000 there were 87,900 substantiated cases
of child sexual abuse (U.S. Department of Health)

Only 1 – 10% of child sexual abuse cases
are even reported (FBI)

1 of every 7 victims of sexual assault is under age 6
(Bureau of Justice Statistics)

On average a pedophile molests 117 children,
most of whom do not report the offense
(National Institute of Mental Health)

67% of victims of sexual assault are under 18
(Bureau of Justice Statistics)

Chances of getting caught committing a sexual
offense are 3% (Dr. Gene Abel, M.D.)
